Bronx Community Charter School is currently located in the Fordham neighborhood of the Bronx. The median income for the area is $24,000 and 33% of households are living in poverty, but there is a great richness in the ethnic and cultural life of the community.

 
 

The student population of BxC proudly reflects the ethnic and language diversity of the area. Our families identify as 41% Latino, 31% African-American, 5% African, 6% White, 4% Asian, and 13% Multi-Racial. Our students speak ten home languages, including Spanish, Turkish, Arabic, Bengali, Urdu, Korean, Hausa, Wolof, and Twi. 83% of our students receive free or reduced priced lunch.

 
 

Martha Andrews has been an educator in New York City schools for thirteen years. She taught at P.S. 173 in Manhattan, the Bronx New School/P.S. 51, and Future Leaders Institute Charter School. Alongside her classroom teaching, much of her work focused on documenting and making public the work of classrooms and teachers. She has presented at regional conferences and her work is featured on the National Center for Restructuring Education, Schools and Teaching's on-line materials. Martha did a leadership internship with Morty Ballen at Explore Charter School to learn about charter leadership. She holds a B.A. in political science from Brown University, and an M.A. in Elementary Education from the Steinhardt School of Education at New York University. She is a part of the Educational Leadership Program at Bank Street College, and has been a guest lecturer in graduate courses at Bank Street College and City College.

Sasha Wilson has been an educator in New York City for the past 15 years. He has spent most of that time working with children in the north central Bronx, where he is also a resident and a local parent. He taught for ten years at the Bronx New School/P.S. 51, and held numerous leadership roles including UFT chapter leader and membership on the School Leadership Team and the Personnel Committee. He is a fluent Spanish speaker and was the founding teacher at the Los Chavalitos School in Nicaragua. He did a leadership internship with Allison Keil and Sara Stone at Community Roots Charter School to learn about charter leadership. He holds a B.A. in government from Wesleyan University and an M.S. in Elementary Education from Bank Street College of Education, where he is also a part of the Educational Leadership Program.

FINANCE AND OPERATIONS

Kathleen Elie, Director of Finance
Kathleen is in her second year as Director of Finance at Bronx Community. In this position, she is responsible for the fiscal well-being and functioning of the school, but she also supervises recess and takes care of children when they're not feeling well. She has been with the school since April 2008, prior to opening its doors to the first Kindergarten and 1st grade classes. Kathleen brings nine years experience working for education-related non profits such Urban Education Exchange and Prep for Prep.  She holds a B.A. in Sociology from Stony Brook University of the State University of New York and a Masters in Public Administration from Baruch College of the City University of New York.

Roxane Brogan, Operations Manager
Roxane is in her second year as the Operations Manager at BxC. In this position, she is responsible for the smooth running of all operational aspects of the school, from purchasing to lunches to school buses.  After graduating from college, she went to work at the Bronx District Attoney's Office, Gang/Major Case Bureau for 4 years as paralegal.  In 2005 she went to work at Prep for Prep, a non-profit educational program, as an operations associate.  In June 2008, Roxane joined the founding staff of BxC wanting to continue working in the educational field.  Roxane holds a B.A. from Alfred University.

Anna Lugo, School Aide
Anna is in her second year as a school aide at Bronx Community.  In this role, she teaches sciences to kindergartners, works individually with students who need extra help, and supervises students in a variety of settings.  She brings over nine years of experience in working with school-aged children as a youth specialist, counselor, site coordinator for the Arts Connection program, and director of an after-school program.  Anna has co-led and participated in a variety of workshops, including family involvement, thematic approaches to curriculum,and learning literacy through art. Anna is working on completing her B.A. at Lehman College  

Nelson Villa, School Aide
Nelson is in his first year as a school aide at Bronx Community. Nelson has been helping and teaching kids from all over New York City for the past nine years. He was a participant in the City Year program, where he taught kids about community service and how to be helpful towards others. He has also worked for years as a counselor at Project Morry Summer Camp, where he himself was one of the founding campers. Nelson was attending Xavier University of Louisiana majoring in Psychology, when he realized that his real passion was teaching. Nelson is now working towards a degree in elementary education at LaGuardia Community College of the City University of New York.
