Central Catholic High School

Admissions Lottery

BxC is dedicated to providing equal educational opportunities for all students. Admission is determined solely through a lottery selection process. Priority is given to siblings of current students and children of staff members. Following this, all District 10 residents are selected before considering out-of-district applicants.

We prioritize lottery preference for students in grades 1 through 8 who are verified English Language Learners (ELLs).

BxC proudly encourages students with special needs and English language learners to apply. We offer ICT classes from Kindergarten through 8th grade, as well as self-contained 12:1:1 classes for Kindergarten through 5th grade.

Our admissions lottery will be held on April 23rd, 2024 at 10am.

Frequently-Asked Questions

  • What is a charter school?

A charter school is an independent public school, offering the same services that other public schools offer but with the ability to make many of our own decisions.

  • Where is BxC located?

We’re at 3170 Webster Avenue, at the corner of 205 Street.  We have a beautiful school building, and we designed the school space ourselves, and it’s full of color and light!  Our school contains a drumming room, a dance studio, science rooms for elementary and middle school, and a play space on the roof.

  • How many students and how many classes does BxC have?

We have 490 students spread over 20 classes, with two classes per grade at most grade levels.

  • What are the school hours?

The school day runs from 8:30-4:00 Monday-Thursday and 8:30-2:00 on Friday.  Doors open and buses arrive at 8:00, and breakfast is 8:00-8:30.

  • Why is the school day so long?

We believe that it’s important for students to read, write, and do math, but also to build, paint, dance, and play.  In order to fit all of that in, we have a longer school day that allows students to have a variety of experiences.

  • Why do students leave at 2:00 on Friday?

On Fridays from 2:00-4:00, our staff engages in professional development so that we can all continue to get better at serving our students.

  • How big are classes?

Each class has 26 students and two teachers.

  • Does BxC serve students with special needs?

We welcome all students, no matter what their needs are.  Every class at BxC is a co-taught integrated co-teaching (ICT) class, that includes students with and without identified special needs.  There are two teachers for every class, a general educator and a special educator, who collaborate completely to serve all of their students.  We also offer SETSS (resource room), speech and language therapy, counseling, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.

  • Does BxC have any smaller special education classes?

BxC has two 12:1:1 special education classes for students in K-4.

  • Does BxC have bilingual or dual language classes?

We do not have bilingual classes, but we have two ENL (English as a New Language) teachers who work with students who are still working on mastering English.  We do not have dual language classes, but we have a Spanish teacher and students from K-8 study Spanish for at least one semester each year.

  • Where do students play?

We have a play area on our roof where students go for recess every day.  Kindergartners have an hour-long recess each day, while others have half an hour.  Students from 2nd-6th grades also go to the Bronx River Park for physical education, and students in 7th and 8th grades go to Lehman College once a week for swimming, basketball, volleyball, fitness, and more.

  • Do students wear uniforms?

No, BxC students do not wear uniforms.

  • Is there school busing?

Students in kindergarten through 6th grade are entitled to school busing if they live far enough away from the school (half a mile from school for young children, a mile for older ones).  Buses travel all over the district, and may not stop on your block but will probably stop a few blocks from you.  Students in 7th and 8th grade receive MetroCards.

  • Is there an afterschool program?

We have free afterschool programs for all of our students whose families sign up.

  • When is the last day to apply?

April 1, 2025 is the last day to apply to BxC for the 2025-26 school year.

  • How does the lottery work?

    • For all grades, first preference goes to siblings of BxC students and children of BxC staff members.
    • After that, for kindergarten we randomly select applicants who live in District 10, offering spots until we’ve reached 52 (two classes of 26) and then placing the rest in order on a waiting list.  After that, we place all of the students who live outside of District 10 on the waiting list.
    • For grades 1-8, every student gets placed on a waiting list.  We give preference to students who are officially classified by the DoE as English Language Learners living in District 10 and we select them right after siblings and staff children.  After that, we select all the other students who live in District 10, then move on to students who don’t live in District 10.
    •  As spaces open up in different grades, we call families of students on the waiting list to offer them the spots.
    • The lottery is a public event, and will be held in person and on Zoom on April 23, 2025 at 9am.  The link will be posted on our website.  All are welcome to come, but there is no advantage or disadvantage to being there.
    • After the lottery, we will call all the kindergarten applicants who got a seat in the lottery.
    • If you are applying for any other grade, or don’t get a call about kindergarten by April 28th, call the school at 718-944-1400 to find out where your child is on the waiting list.

  • How many spots are available in each grade?

    • We have 52 kindergarten spots.  Usually about 20 of them are filled by siblings of BxC students and staff children, and the rest are selected through the lottery.  In a normal year we have about 200 applications for kindergarten, but that changes from year to year.
    • For 1st-5th grades, we only have spots when students move or leave the school.  That is usually between three and five spots per grade.
    • For 6th grade, we usually have 7-10 spots, since some families choose a different middle school for their children.
    • For 7th and 8th grades, we usually have one or two spots per grade.
